Looks like a good tutorial, but I don't know where to get the resistor. It looks like I'm going to be getting a replacement motherboard.

Next time I try this, Ill probably just get a good pogo pin board. :)

Thanks for the tips anyway!

Try finding the resistors online, they are not that expensive (got a strip of 10 SMD resistors for $2 from my local shop), and its much cheaper to change that resistor instead of buying a new motherboard

Hm. RA2 doesn't bring much up in google. I don't know. I don't feel confident enough to repair it. If someone wants it, they could have it cheap, replace the resistor, and use it for development or something, I don't know.

You mean that you destroyed that thing marked with RA2, that doesnt looks like a resistor... or maybe I am wrong, but I never saw an resistor with multiple pins

Also, counting fail. There were eight pins.

Edit: Oops, I thought I said that there were six pins in a previous post.

After looking a bit into my old courses from my old high school, I found thats an quad array of resistors... is there any code on top of it ? SMD resistors are marked with a 3 digit code which indicates their value...

I lost it, so I don't know. If someone else with their 3DS open could inform us, that would be great. Even so, I don't believe I have the skill to repair it.

Go to any local phone service, they have the equipment to do it for you, only if you could find the value of that thing... hmm

Im sure someone would be interested in buying it if you ask around....I would of bought it probs buts postage to uk would be silly and I could just get a working board for the total costs, just ask around in here I'm sure someone could use it even just for testing the nand unlock code for the arduino.....might even be able to tip someone to try fix it for you and unlock at the same time

I just screwed up my system when trying this, not enough experience I guess. I accedentally destroyed the small chip next to DAT0, now 3ds will not boot.

Repair is impossible, the chip is destroyed. What now?

Is there any bypass for this, workaround, etc? Or should I just cut my losses and sell the broken system?

There is someone on the boards selling just a motherboard for $70 :)
Unfortunately it seems to be on 6.3 though. Not sure if that would work for you.

This is why I practiced and asked, ok so less is more in thihs case. I'll exchange the iron for a lesser wattage and smaller tip

I am FAR from an expert here, but you can get away with different wattages. I have used a 25w and a 50w. FWIW the 25w will burn the hell out of things too, if not careful (att eh very least melt plastic). IMO, the most important thing, is a really fine tip and some properly applied flux (you can use a toothpick). The points are on the smaller side, so even a really low wattage (and therefore "safer") iron is going to be a bigger PITA than a higher wattage with a small tip. Radioshack sells an iron with some various tips that I went ahead and bought. I never invested into a professional iron because I never needed one. I have, however, don more solder work between car stereos, mod chips, etc. so I will probably invest in a nicer variable wattage kit. The take home point, though, is that it isn't absolutely crucial.

hehe 1st step for my solderless thingy, i'm following n1ghty's design :P don't have more time today and din open the 3dsxl to see if the distances between the pogo pins match the pcb pads, but i think my holes are at same distance as n1ghty's, 2.54mm, i'll continue tomorrow or the next day ^^

That looks like a good solution for my solderless unbricker...

Considering pogo-pins are a good option for the 3ds XL, and there are at least several tempers interested in such a chip, we might as well go overhaul and replace the majority of the back of the 3ds.

Have features like:

5-pin NAND connector (with a switch to enable/disable the DAT3 line, depending on whether you need to do an unbrick or not.
Extended battery life, or at least larger space in case for battery, or ability to use AA's (lol)
(seriously, why is the only good option right now a $100 pack?)

Obviously I'm dreaming here, but a correctly shaped piece of plastic and this is totally doable. As the pogo pins would be now almost impossible to mis-align and destroy your system, It would totally be an awesome attachment.
