Bought it on ebay preowned in the US. There is no way in hell I'm testing another motherboard.
If your friend claims that he installed it right, and there is no reason for you believe otherwise.

Then the answer is you have a faulty LCD screen. Simple as that. Unless you got the screen brand new from Nintendo, there is the distinct possiblity that the screen is broken.

Obviously i hope not, this is my 2nd screen, I can't test the old one because it broke on the way out. The picture on ebay did show it working but it wasn't packed too good

Unless both screens were replaced, that is not the problem. Because the un-replaced screen should turn on. And the chance that you got both a top and bottom screen that was DOA is most likely near impossible.

according to every other user, the 3ds shuts off when one of the ribbon cables isn't working, like christmas lights before the 2000's.

would my best bet be getting another n3ds and just swapping out the motherboards? I mean i can't test my screen to see if that's the issue, even though there is no other explanation. I have nothing to test the screen with, and my old one broke. I cant just send the screen back with no proof.

I'm here with those stupid "Are you sure you have" questions so bear with me
Are your A9LH files on the SD?
Is the SD reader dirty?
Have you tried another SD?
Are there any wires that look out of place?

yup, tested every single one

1: yes, i re-installed luma 5.5 to make sure
2: Nope, not only did i clean it, but the 3ds acts differently with the sd card in, proving it mounts the sd card
3:yes, my old 32gb produced the same results
4: i and the guy doing most of the work can both agree this 3ds looks just like it used to

So like anyone else here know if motherboard swapping is easy or not? Screen swapping is a living hell, and I don't want to spend 200 bucks on another n3ds if it will just break the second I put in the new motherboard

motherboard swapping is literally disconnecting everything from the old motherboard and tossing in the new one.

The only things I can think of is either:
Ir Blaster is inserted incorrectly
Top Screen is not detected (Ribbon not inserted all the way or a trace is broken)
Bottom Screen is not detected (Ribbon not inserted all the way or a trace is broken)
Touch Screen is not detected (*)

Those are the only answers unless your sdcard or the reader is borked.

If the sd card reader was borked the light wouldn't cut out, but thanks! This helps!
