Hi,
I was hoping to reach out and request some help, I 'm with a group of people trying to archive the wonderful world of Culdcept!
long story short, I got most of the musical resources but it seems everything like animations, and models, all that fun jazz is locked behind a .dat file.
i know .dats are super common and stupid, but this is one walnut I just cant crack!
I really think this would help our community if we can getit a goin' but I'm super stuck.
has anyone had any experience in this kinda thing?
is it okay to post the dat?
ahhh sos pleeassseee

Files named ".dat" are super common. But one file named ".dat" doesn't necessarily have anything whatsoever in common with another file named ".dat". I don't even know what leads you to conclude that it should contain animations and models – and even if it did contain "animations and models", what would you do with them without knowing what format they are in?

A problem like this comes down to the same difficult reverse engineering as everything else. There are probably not any shortcuts.

Yes Dear, I know that. That is why I said It's a Common file, Im sorry i didn't say "Type" at the end of it.
I guess it gave off the impression that I didn't know such an elementary fact from the begin with.

But yes, It's a generic file type that could be anything,
I've tried a number of extractors know .dat files in the 3ds format.
which is why I was asking for assistance. Perhaps someone already has one, or has experience in creating something that can help with the project.

As to what lead me to believe that this file contains the info i need is plain and simple.
The Musical data is not compressed in the .Dat format and takes up half of the file's size.
While the remainder/missing data. Images, models, resources , ect that are missing from the extraction, Anyone with two brain cells, would put two and two together and assume it would be inside the compressed .dat file
The only other file inside the game.

Can you open it in a hex editor like HxD, and post a screenshot of the beginning of the file here? That'll at least help identify what kind of file it might be.

Also, what tools have you tried to use, if any?

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

Nothing special about it other than it's more comfortable than the Lite

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

    but that's a long shot

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
