I find Steam highly practical. Everything I have on there I can just download wherever I am, whenever I want, no disc needed, game installed, playing, done. Sure thing, I could also do that with GOG through there page or their client, but Steam has been around for me since it was released with HL2 back then, I have a huge library, it will always be a part of my gaming.

Well, if there's games that you can only find on Steam, what you can do is go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\(Insert Game Title Here), right click your EXE file, make a shortcut out of that, and put it on your Desktop. You won't need to deal with Steam's bullshit when you launch the game.

Not really, you must use the In-Game Steam menu (Ctrl+Tab) during the game. In some old PCs may cause trouble with the RAM/CPU, as my old PC (Athlon X2 and emh emh.. GeForce G100).
Now I like Steam, but I hate its community. For example, on Competitive on CS:GO I always get kicked by dumby player that doesn't accept any people who overhelm them.
Btw, Steam will be always a part of my videogamer life. :creep:

If anyone can find me a digital copy of the racing game BLUR for sale, I'll be in your debt. The only way I can play it is piracy, and I WANT to pay for it.

As others have said, if you can't find a legal DRM-free version of the game on GoG or something, the only alternative is piracy. Steam actually doesn't update that often at all - maybe like once a month or so if you don't have it set to the beta channel. See http://store.steampowered.com/news/?feed=steam_client for proof. Admittedly though, the update checking when you start it is horribly slow and takes way too long. I have honestly no idea why. But for me and many other people, the convenience of having everything in one place with easy redownloads and the massive sales more than make up for the inconveniences.

buying games in store doesn't completely let you get away from steam, My friend bought fallout in store, and it was simply a steam key LOL

Well, whatever there's no alternative to Steam. Steam is the biggest digital shop.
If you don't want Steam and DRM clients overally: Don't play games or just play Indie games. Ubisoft and other developers have thier own DRM like Microsoft Store, EA (Origin) and Ubisoft (Ubi).

TBH on my gpd win I try to avoid steam as much as I can*. On a high end PC, you can just have it run in the background without problems, but on a device where memory optimization is important and that only is turned on to game, it's mostly taking up memory and delaying the actual launch of the game.

*not that I go out of my way for it, but if I have a GoG or other DRM-free variant, I use that one.
that actually makes sense then. :P

Hi,

I'm sorry if this happens but there are so many cases that i'm quite lost. Here's my problem :

I've bought a few games (one with CD, aka Skyrim, and another one yesterday for the soldes) but the thing is that I hate Steam. I hate the way it works. It needs almost a half of a giga to install on your computer, after you have updates every days, you can't install with CD properly because of this etc etc (i've a bad internet speed i've bought a 50Go game). And this is really boring. After I like the fact that all your games are in one place. But the thing you are dependant of a software is a shame. Really.

So I'd like to know if there are way to avoid the installation of steam in a computer, a way to play games WITHOUT having to use Steam, tips like that.

Thanks o/

As others have stated, the best thing to do is use an alternative like GOG. However, if you want to be able to download steam games you bought without using the steam GUI interface, you can use SteamCMD.

Optical media seems to have fallen out of favor in the PC world, making digital distribution the only viable option. Besides some of those 60+ gb games would require at least a dual layer blu-ray disc, maybe even one of those UHD ones, and how many people really sprung for a blu-ray drive for their gaming rig, let alone a UHD compatible one? I know I still have just a DVD reader/writer in mine, and any HD video I watch is on my hard drive or streaming.

IIRC Dual-Layer is 50 gb, so it would require at least single-layer BDXL (or those experimental triple-layer or whatever disks). But hey, i paid 200$ for my bd drive so i'd be fine with that

What i do personally is download the game from steam, then use SSELauncher (SmartSteamEmu) to play them without having to rely on steam... great for playing with my dad with him using the emu and me using steam itself (I'd be willing to share the emu... BUT NO GAMES GOT THAT!)

i thought we already conclusioned that steam is way to go and end discussion here? if u dont wanna steam u dont should wanna game :P
Dude...it's not a discussion if you blatantly ignore the points people have brought up. "we" haven't concluded...sorry: "conclusioned" that steam is (the) way to go. You did. That's fine and all, but pretending to speak on behalf of others when you don't even acknowledge what they're saying is just you being an arrogant bastard.

    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.

the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze

    so..... yeah

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in

    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
