Definitely some interest. It's a shame that progress died out seeing as link cable stuff is pretty much last on the list of things we have to code into a GBC emulator for the 3DS; at the very least I was hoping in the days before RBY VC came out that we'd at least learn enough to reverse engineer our own, but turns out it's not as simple as that.

Hey guys. I have a question regarding the injection of Savefiles.

I successfully injected a save file from my original Red and Yellow Rom into the eshop versions of those games with svdt. However I have trouble getting the same method to work with pokemon gold.
I can extract the sav.dat with svdt no problem. The flash save i get with vba is just a few bytes short, so I add a couple FF's to the file and save.
The extracted save has the exact same size as my modified save. I then reinject the save file with svdt. However when I open the game again, It just loads the game as if I didnt do anything.
I noticed that while the Yellow save only included a sav.dat the GBC games I tried this with also had rsm1.dat (or similiar) files. Deleting those resulted in corrupted saves.
Any advise?

I did it with silver and crystal, and it worked as expected.
Maybe you did something wrong
I injected my ~90% save from VBA to injected rom, on old generation of VC

Does the VC you used offer savestates? Like not actual saving ingame but a savestate in the VC? I think thats messing it up for me.

So we managed to decrypt and extract the 2016 release of Pokémon Red.
I managed to inject Pokémon Crystal (French) instead and it's working.

So now I'm guessing things:
1) Inject several GB(C), like Gold/Silver/Crystal, and try local trade.
2) Try to merge the OldVC with the NewVC. Because the new can't use the insta-save (or perma-save, I don't know the english name because I play in French). So save in the VC Menu, if you see what I mean.

Who have x2 3DS and ability to run run CIAs for try the local trade with injected rom into the NewVC?
Edit: Nevermind

Don't use the save directly created by the emulator as it includes RTC offset info, use (in VisualBoyAdvance) File/Export Battery :)

Not gonna read through 24 pages of posts, can I play Pokémon Crystal (or other GB games) with multiplayer on the 3DS now, and if not, is anyone working on this?

It's technically possible but netcode offsets have to be found and programmed into the patch files (of which there's no decent documentation, at least for this purpose)

So today, just for a bit of fun (since I was feeling slightly burnt out from another unrelated project) I decided to try to finally overcome the inevitable and make a patch for Crystal. The patch isn't fully complete yet, but here's what I have working:

Typically, if there is no Link Cable connected with a player on the other end, the game will simply prompt you that "Your friend is not ready." Here, I am actually able to enter both the Cable Club Colosseum and Trade Center with no problem. The only issue is that the VC doesn't take over and have you connect to another player! It just mirrors whatever you do. (For example, in a battle, both Pokemon would be exactly the same and would use the same moves)
This is good progress, and I still have more to add to the patches. Fingers crossed, guys!

Apologies for the shaky video.

EDIT: I should also mention that the save being used is one off of the internet, so the textbox style, name, and etc is not mine.

Awesome work!!! I think there's much trial and error on this job, plus the time of re-building every CIA you make (at least you're using Hans)...

So, right now, can you trade Crystal-to-Crystal?

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
