1) make your first revision barebones with no features whatsoever, making it so competitive in price it will most likely be successful (nintendo realized the 2DS should have been the original 3DS, when they announced it)
Thats why they improved it and it emphasized for this version?

Not that I'm going to argue or anything, but he literally described the control setup gamers are accustomed with since it was introduced on the PS1, aka standard dual analog.

Exactly that.
I doubt the 2nd analogue stick is comfortable, let alone working as a stick.
It's prolly just a pointer, that digs into yer thumb.

As I mentioned earlier, it looks like a "laptop nub", which is fine for what it's meant to do - provide camera control. I "tested" how it'll feel like simply by grabbing my 3DS and "pretending" that the nub is there and it wasn't terribly uncomfortable.

A standard console controller and the 3DS system are very different in shape. You realized the 3Ds is a rectangle right? The ps1 controller is built for peoples hands. Unless you have bigfoot hands, bending your thumb back to use the face buttons is going to be really painful. Try playing games with the d-pad and sholder buttons at the same time and see what I mean.

Just because the case itself is a rectangle doesn't mean that it magically can't have normal dual analog. If anything, the only thing that restricts the 3DS from having proper dual analog is Nintendo's insistence on making it thin and small - if they made it 1 centimeter wider, we wouldn't have this problem and it would still be portable. The Wii U gamepad strongly resembles a 3DS's bottom half and it has dual analog. By extension, the same could be done on a 3DS just fine.

Did the same, big no no for me.

3DS XL is huge, plenty of room to make a normal controller layout on it.

Actually its the hinges. They could design it like the Wii u controller and move the zr/zl buttons to the back so the player isn't straining their hands.

I too would prefer to have the shoulder buttons placed in a vertical order (if that's what you mean), but that would require creating a ridge like on the Wii U controller or increasing the thickness of that side of the 3DS.

Anywho, reaching for the second analog stick/face buttons (depending on the orientation) wouldn't be any more straining than reaching for the d-pad, which I use all the time. All it took was not moving the Start/Select buttons away from the bottom of the screen and instead placing the face buttons/second analog stick there. Of course they'd have to make some space for the analog assembly (which is pretty sizable), but I don't think it's something that couldn't be done.

Only if you smooth out the console and shift the zl/zr buttons downward. even then, that would make it difficult to hold of public.

Wondering how this will feel next to the Vita nubs which I still haven't gotten comfortable with in most games.....

But it sure looks uncomfortable as hell tho....that placement

Agreed, but I think they'd have to make it more than one centimeter wider. The PS Vita pulls it off just fine (from what I've seen and played in demo units, as I don't own a Vita).

I dunno, something about that d-pad is awkward to use for long periods of time, which is why it is mostly used for quick item section and such.

I don't understand why that would be the case, the 3DS wouldn't be any more uncomfortable to hold than it is now.

It's not in the best of places. The thumb provides about 90 degrees of rotation on that axis, so to make it 100% comfortable, the two cannot be ordered vertically
(as they are now), rather at an angle. The slider would have to be close to the edge of the system and the d-pad would have to be close to the screen (diagonal orientation in relation to each other), hence my suggestion to make the system itself wider - you could re-orient them.

The Vita positioned it analoge sticks under the buttons. Plus, as a PS1 owner for over 10 years, I still hate how uncomfortable sony's placement is. If you ask me, the 360 had the best controller only because the d-pad and second stick was moved inward to a more natural position.

Sony's arrangement isn't ideal and you're right in saying that the 360 (and Gamecube) arrangement is the most "anatomically correct" one.

The centimeter is a made up figure and subject to "actual design" rather than pondering - my point was that it wouldn't have to be substantially altered to accomodate "comfortable" dual analog. :P

They're positioned at an angle, though. It's a very slight angle, but it's still better than how the 3DS does it.

But the dpad is complete poop
Oh so you wanted to press left on the dpad? Ok instead im gonna interpert it as up or down until the 5th time you press it

Broke my thumbs aswell. The only saving grace was the ergonomic design so you can just slide your hands down, unlike the boxy 3ds.
The new 3ds one is far from perfect, but its a decent attempt at an otherwise complicated feat.

I'm used to criticising Sony for sticking with their arrangement for so many years despite the decline in the d-pad's importance. The left analog stick should've migrated to the d-pad's position ages ago at this point, and that sectioned d-pad was designed by the devil himself. The DS4 is a big step in the right direction as it gets rid of the, in my opinion, far too small classic Dual Shock case in favour of a new, more ergonomical one, but the stick/button/d-pad placement still leaves a lot to be desired. To be fair though, the PSVita's d-pad is excellent, so they do know how to make a good one.
