People are dicks. Usually, people who are big dicks have to compensate for their "normal" dick. These "people" usually use their money to maintain "power" because, 1. They usually have shitty attitudes, 2. They usually have insecurity issues, and they combine their shitty attitudes and insecurities with the knowledge money will make people "like" you more. But, how does one acquire this money? Some have businesses, while some use investments and sometimes bigger dicks will tell these not-so-big-dicks, "If you want us to invest money in your business, protect your assets so we can keep making money so we can keep treating people like shit because we have nothing else to offer."

TL;DR;OMH Nintendo probably has to protect their IP's to keep licenses to keep investors happy.

I think this is part of the reason there will never be a western release of PSO2. They never took any action against the fan translation (and far superior fan-made launcher) and figured everyone who wanted to play it on this side of the world was already playing the translation, so there was no reason to bring it over.

Ninty shuts down everything, whether it's gonna be sold or not, as long as it's one of their main franchises. That means if it's a free game based on something even Ninty doesn't care about anymore, only then will it be allowed to stay alive. It's like they are doing it just to get more money, rather than protect their IPs...

As for Sega, they have shut down a fair few fan games, but if the games are based on old ones and free they don't bother. For example, there's the Sega Rally Championship based game that has about 25 cars (compared to 2 the normal one does) and twice the maps and they have allowed it to stay alive for a decade now without any problems and even one of the devs of the original said he liked the fan-made one more!

But not chrono trigger remaster from back in 03 I think it was? Complete remake with a nice 3d engine and about 40% done then DMCA'd from nintendo including the infamous crimson echos (but we know there were backups of that shared ahem) it's a shame too because that would of been a wet dream come true

I was referring to smaller titles, Chrono Trigger is still one of the most well known games by Nintendo, but I can see your point...
