I'm not certain about what is connected to the Wii Board. Is it just the chip, or is there a full PCB board like the other modchips?

yaosm runs on a simple chip, so only that is connected
Or you can have a bit more 'complicated' one, like this (the left thing on the picture)
you can connect a flatcable to it which comes out of the backside of the wii. you can connect a programmer to it (on the right) to reprogram (update) the chip
this thing, the wii-boss, is the chip I have in my wii
