Yahoo! is a million times more useful in Japan, where it does a lot more than search and in fact is used more commonly than Google for all its different services.

This doesn't apply to Japan only, but across East Asian countries as a matter of fact. Yahoo in Taiwan is the default homepage for probably 95% of computer users, because of its various features that are somehow missing in the Western versions. Google Taiwan has been pushing out advertisements and daily contests to encourage people to use Google Search instead of Yahoo.
