Hacking Xmenu update

I want to update my firelink, I've read the FAQ and variuos guides,
I have one additional question.

My firelink is running Udisk v1.45 and xmenu 2.51 (unsure).
If I want to simply update the xmenu to 2.55 can I simply overwrite the xmenu.dat file in the firelink card directory or do I have to do a complete flash/update of the firelink card?

If you realy have installed Udisk 1.45, you just have to overwrite the xmenu.dat~
But to be 100% saved you just can backup your old xmenu.dat ;>

In USB mode the card says v1.45.
I'll back it up just in case
