There are several threads around here but 3 things
Emulators/software. Search for something called auto installer deluxe aka AID. It is a collection of the all the best software for the xbox. Xbox homebrew software was/is usually made with the official SDK so it can not be distributed in binary form.

Mod method. Modchip and softmod.
Modchip. No real advantages over a softmod at this stage.

Softmod. Two main methods.
Gamesave method.
Here you get one of three games and use a bug with the saves to get things started.

Hotswap method.
You get the hard drive out of the xbox (while it is running, hence hotswap). Boot with a certain version of linux on a PC and then copy stuff across.

Threads around here (there are many more but those should do or at least have links to place with more info):

There are many around here with fairly in depth knowledge so if you have a more specific question then go for it.

wow information overload. thanks. I just did a lot of reading.

I may try the softmod.

It isn't necessary to manually rename the roms. A tool such as Good GUI can do it for you, and at the same time organise the roms into US/EUR/JP etc folders.

Details and guide at

I went through this process myself recently, takes about a days work to get full rom sets for every xbox emulator sorted, named, zipped, and organised.
