I've been PC gaming more recently with a controller, playing Elden Ring. The problem I have is I don't know how much charge is left in my eneloops until the controller goes dead, usually in a boss fight.

I tried to download the Xbox Accessories app for Win 10 so I can see the battery status, but I get an error every time. Is this some kind of MS fuckery or is there something I'm missing?

I don't know anything about the current state of xbox controllers on PC and APIs of them.

However if they are just AA batteries then I will note little 8 segment voltmeters are readily available these days for next to nothing (though lower voltages can be tricky), and going more basic than that you can do a simple low voltage circuit with basic components

The Xbox Accessories app gives you more ways to play when paired with an Xbox Wireless Controller, an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller, or an Xbox Adaptive Controller. Create and edit controller profiles by remapping buttons, swapping sticks and triggers, and configuring controller vibration. The app allows you to update firmware for your controller and enables Copilot mode, so you can use two different controllers as if they were one. Additionally, with an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller or Xbox Adaptive Controller, you can save multiple profiles to your controller, so they’re ready to use whenever you’re ready to game. You can also remap bumpers and paddles, configure the level of vibration, and configure thumbstick sensitivity curves on your Xbox Elite Wireless Controller. For gamers using the Xbox Adaptive Controller or an Elite Series 2, this app gives you the option to swap your thumbstick X and Y axes and assign Shift inputs. Adjustable trigger dead zones give you the edge in your favorite games when using an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller, and you can even adjust the brightness of the Xbox button. Rename your controller to make it yours and store up to 256 different configurations within the app itself.
I am sorry,I do not see any Sign of an "Battery Status" Option...
I think,they "forgot" this Feature....

why not try going wired? not entirely a great solution to your problem but it works and you won't have to worry about dead batteries while playing games

two of the slits on the back of the 360 controller battery pack are for charging, two for dispensing, and the last two are for determining battery level. you can dispense them to nothing if they're giving you a wrong charge level with a paperclip. you have to bridge two of the slits together. the paperclip should get hot almost immediately, keep doing that till it no longer gets hot. then, try to charge the battery. btw, if you're trying to check charge levels on the pc, I wouldn't bother. microsoft really fucked up the receiver. there's a point right around where the light comes on that gets detached, and microsoft decided to discontinue the unit instead of fixing it. I couldn't say if microsoft accessories still work, but I would've imagined it was set up for windows 7 rather than 10.
