You can if the laptop has two network ports, use a standard wired cable (some will say you need a crossover but most modern ports will work around it) and connect to the router via wireless on the laptop.
In windows select both connections, right click and press bridge connections.

Yeah, most laptops these days come with a wired connection and more than a few come with wireless built, not that USB or PCMCIA are hard to come by.

All I needed for my laptop was just an Ethernet cable.

Plugged the Ethernet cable into the port on my laptop, and then plugged the other end into the Xbox and viola. Though it did take about 45 minutes to fully get it working since I had to configure settings through the wireless settings. I also have to disable my anti-virus' firewall for the Xbox to connect.

That is why I just ended up buying the wireless adapter I posted.

I found this to be the best way. I had a spare old wireless router with DD-WRT on it. Worked just fine.
