[BitLocker (known issue)] A BitLocker recovery screen shows when you start up your device. This occurs after you install the July 9, 2024, update. This issue is more likely to occur if device encryption is on. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Device encryption. To unlock your drive, Windows might ask you to enter the recovery key from your Microsoft account.
[Lock screen] This update addresses CVE-2024-38143. Because of this, the “Use my windows user account” check box is not available on the lock screen to connect to Wi-Fi.
[NetJoinLegacyAccountReuse] This update removes this registry key. For more information refer to KB5020276—Netjoin: Domain join hardening changes.
[Secure Boot Advanced Targeting (SBAT) and Linux Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI)] This update applies SBAT to systems that run Windows. This stops vulnerable Linux EFI (Shim bootloaders) from running. This SBAT update will not apply to systems that dual-boot Windows and Linux. After the SBAT update is applied, older Linux ISO images might not boot. If this occurs, work with your Linux vendor to get an updated ISO image.

Latest Windows 11 update cripples PCs. Here’s what to do if you’re affected
https://www.pcworld.com/article/243...ripples-pcs-what-to-do-if-youre-affected.html
Last week, Microsoft released the KB5041585 cumulative update for Windows that packed together a bunch of improvements and security patches along with fixing the BitLocker BSOD issue.
But in what appears to be a trend this year, this Windows update comes with some serious side effects.
According to IT blog Borncity (German), patch KB5041585 can cause Windows 11 PCs to crawl to a halt due to skyrocketing CPU usage. And according to Windows Latest, the patch can even fail to install altogether on some PCs. Complaints from affected users can be found across social media, such as in this Reddit thread.
Windows Latest continues: “KB5041585 has also led to high CPU usage, with some users reporting that their CPU is constantly at 100%, causing everything to run slowly and leading to frequent timeouts.”

Windows 11/10 system driver has BSOD-triggering CVE-2024-6768 flaw on fully updated PCs
https://www.neowin.net/news/windows...ring-cve-2024-6768-flaw-on-fully-updated-pcs/
Last month, a large number of Windows enterprise and business PCs worldwide came head-on with one of the biggest global computing outages of all time. It was a consequence of a buggy CrowdStrike Falcon IPC Template Type and this month the cybersecurity firm released its final report about the issue. What all that led to is the infamous Blue Screens of Death (BSODs), which has its roots in the first Windows NT (version 3.1) days.
While the CrowdStrike BSOD outage was a consequence of a botched security update, a new BSOD-triggering security flaw has been discovered in a Windows driver by cybersecurity firm Fortra, and fully updated Windows systems are affected by this vulnerability.
The firm explains that the Windows' CLFS.SYS driver, responsible for handling the Common Log FIle System, is the root of the issue and is triggered by improper validation (CWE-1284) thus leading to a denial of service-induced BSOD. The issue is being tracked under ID "CVE-2024-6768." Fortra's Nicardo Narvaja writes:
CVE-2024-6768 is a vulnerability in the Common Log File System (CLFS.sys) driver of Windows, caused by improper validation of specified quantities in input data. This flaw leads to an unrecoverable inconsistency, triggering the KeBugCheckEx function and resulting in a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD). The issue affects all versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11, despite having all updates applied.
A Proof of Concept (PoC) shows that by crafting specific values within a .BLF file, an unprivileged user can induce a system crash. The potential problems include system instability and denial of service, as malicious users can exploit this vulnerability to repeatedly crash affected systems, disrupting operations and potentially causing data loss.
The bright side is that this is a local attack so a threat actor trying to manipulate the CLFS' Base Log File (BLF) would need physical access to your system. You can find the technical details about the Proof of Concept (PoC) on Fortra's website.
The flaw is similar to CVE-2023-36424 LPE (local privilege escalation) which Microsoft addressed last year with the November 2023 Patch Tuesday updates (KB5032189 for Windows 10 and KB5032190 for Windows 11).
This security flaw report comes hot on the heels of another issue that we covered last week where a fully updated Windows PC can be tricked into downgrading permanently.
Microsoft retires Windows updates causing 0x80070643 errors
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ne...es-windows-updates-causing-0x80070643-errors/
Microsoft has retired several Windows security updates released during the January 2024 Patch Tuesday that have been causing 0x80070643 errors when installing Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates.
Redmond first acknowledged this known issue in January, days after widespread reports from Windows users of 0x80070643 errors.
The company released the problematic KB5034441 (Windows 10 21H2/22H2), KB5034440 (Windows 11 21H2), and KB5034439 (Windows Server 2022) updates to fix CVE-2024-20666, a BitLocker encryption bypass flaw that can let attackers access encrypted data.
This known issue mistakenly shows generic '0x80070643 - ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE' error messages on affected systems instead of the correct CBS_E_INSUFFICIENT_DISK_SPACE error if the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) partition is too small for the update to install.
Following months of investigating the issue and looking for a fix, Redmond announced in May that it won't provide an automated fix for the bug causing these 0x80070643 update errors, instead asking users to manually address it by expanding their WinRE partitions by 250 MB to accommodate the new updates.
"Automatic resolution of this issue won't be available in a future Windows update. Manual steps are necessary to complete the installation of this update on devices that are experiencing this error," Microsoft said.
"The WinRE partition requires 250 megabytes of free space. Devices which do not have sufficient free space will need to increase the size of the partition via manual action."
This Tuesday, Microsoft also killed the buggy updates and replaced them with KB5042320, KB5042321, and KB5042322, as first spotted by Neowin.
The new updates will only be offered if your WinRE recovery partition has enough free space to accommodate the changes, preventing the 0x80070643 errors from being displayed.
"This update automatically applies Safe OS Dynamic Update (KB5034232) to the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) on a running PC. The update installs improvements to Windows recovery features," the replacement updates read.
The company provides users with two options to prepare their WinRE recovery partitions, either to use manual steps detailed in the KB5028997 support document or a dedicated script that can automate the process.
"If you would like to make sure your device is offered this update, please follow the Instructions to manually resize your partition or use a sample script to increase the size of the WinRE recovery partition," Redmond further explains.
"Once your partition has sufficient disk space, click Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates to have the update offered to you and then install it."

Microsoft is discontinuing rounded tabs in Edge

Despite the quiet announcement, rounded tabs still work in Microsoft Edge. If you want to enable that feature, head to edge://flags/#edge-visual-rejuv-rounded-tabs and set the flag to Enabled. Next, enable edge://flags/#edge-rounded-containers. After that, restart Microsoft Edge to apply the changes.
