I'm having some trouble getting a backup image to work via a recovery disc. it errors immediately with this error: 80042302. it says something about a shadow copy. I've tried googling it, but all suggestions have failed. I backed up this way since it was suggested here on temp. is there a way to determine the integrity of the backup? if I try to restore the image in windows itself, it only restores the content of the desktop, music, documents, etc. if I further try with a disc image restore, it says that it can't while the system is running since it has to reformat the hdd. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I think I may have found the problem. apparently, the dump I made prior to the hdd replacement is incompatible with the new hdd. I made a new dump to test this. considering it reboots automatically (within a one minute window), I made a test.txt file afterwards to verify that the dump went through. if it was gone, then it did. that was exactly what happened. :D

an image. the problem with cloning is that it includes free space as well which I don't have the space for.
