I used that Y cable for 5 hard drives, they all worked like a charm and the hard drive is compatible, if you are going to be using it for Wii Homebrew/backups, make sure you never format it through the Wii U and you will be fine

If it works for the Wii there is like a 95% chance it will work for vWii. Also, I would imagine Nintendo would try to make the compatibility high if they are hoping you would get a Hard Drive to purchase more WiiU Content
