It shows the 3ds loading logo, turns black, goes back to the home menu and says error has occurred restarting 3ds.

I don't think there's a way for an old 3ds to play smash bros without gateway new can do it in conjunction with pasta and NTR but NTR only works for gateway.

No, if his sysnand is above 7.X, he should be able to play 7.X encrypted games.

I've made my own FW spoofed cia, but I don't feel like messing with Pasta CFW when I already have GW EmuNAND. However, a region free XB3D cia worked on GW EmuNAND. I'm sure somebody's bound to upload a spoofed version somewhere for testing one of these days.

No, game built with the 11.1 or + sdk won't work on pasta, even with fw spoof.
