A friend whose Wii U I modded with CBHC took off the parental controls and his kids deleted his account that the hack was tied to.

It's been a few years since I've seen a brick.

Has any progress been made on recovering from one or should I tell him to get a new console?

TIA

It still can only be fixed with a nand backup and a hardmod. If your friend doesn't have a nand backup their only option is to get another WiiU.

I bricked my first one modded with CBHC when I tried a factory reset. I ended up having to get another one as well and learned another lesson the hard way :/

you either need a NAND backup from before cbhc or the otp.bin to decrypt the NAND on the system and replace the file.

Well it's never good to have to buy another of anything but at least he has a working gamepad (I assume) that's the most expensive part. Can get another console only for reasonably cheap on Ebay. But anything that was on the previous Wii U even if it was on a hard drive, bye bye gone, unless saves were backed up with SaveMii.

Replacement consoles are like $65 on eBay so it's not too bad.

I actually have two wii u's. one of them I bought when 5.3.2 was the latest exploitable with loadiine.

probably not worth sending it to someone if you have to. $65 for a new system is probably about how much you'd spend to have someone fix the system. just be grateful that you don't have to mod the gamepad in some way or else it would be awful.
