Is Wii U backwards compatible with Wii, GC and N64 ?

Can I use Wii+GC accessories with Wii U ?

Which one do you recommend for softmodding ? Wii or Wii U ?

Wii U supports almost all GC games unofficially with Nintendont. Only native controls are missing (no GC ports for controllers and memory cards on Wii U).
With the Wii U USB to GameCube adapter classic wired GC controllers can be used though.

Wii backwards compatibility is given officially (only missing support for GC controllers in Wii games).

N64 emulators exist. Virtual Console injection and Not64/Wii64.

Both consoles are excellent for modding and emulation.

I wanna buy either Wii or Wii U for softmodding … I want to play N64, GC and Wii games...should I buy a Wii or Wii U ? Does a softmodded Wii U work as good as a softmodded Wii ?

Personally I would choose the Wii U, and what I think are the pros/cons vs the Wii.

Wii U Advantages:
  • HDMI port - 720p/1080p
  • Wii U Games
  • Play games on the Gamepad
  • Better emulation due to better hardware.

Wii U Disadvantages:
  • No GC Ports
  • GC only works if you softmod (nintendon't)
  • Won't read GC discs

The Wii U can do a little more, like higher clock rate even in vWii mode for better emulation (N64, PlayStation 1) and obviously play Wii U games. Some very niche things aren't possible due to missing native controls. Can't connect to Game Boy Advance for things like Tingle Receiver (or whatever it was called) in Wind Waker or use Pokemon Box. Only the Wii with GameCube ports (RVL-001) can do this. (RVL-101 and RVL-201 can't)

The Wii U is more expensive; depending on luck you can get a Wii for very little money.

It is hard to give an advise here. It depends on personal preference. I prefer the Wii because of the ease of use for everyday usage. The system boots very fast and an old Wii with BootMii in boot2 has very good protection against softbricking. I only start my Wii U for Wii U games (the vWii isn't even modded).

Ah. Always forget this part: The Wii is has no digital output by default. The standard composite video cable has bad picture quality. For a better picture you will need a component cable or a Wii2HDMI adapter (which might be needed for very new TVs anyway).

I think the wii u can also have component out for audio as well as hdmi for video. that's how I have mine setup. my wii u is outputting through my surround sound speakers at this very moment. my receiver is very old, so it has no hdmi. the only other option I know of is an hdmi to hdmi+optical (my receiver has several of these). that's what I had plugged in, but I have it unplugged at the moment after breaking something on my entertainment center. I'll replug it back in, because I was able to get surround sound with the switch with it, and it still outputs to the tv as well even though it's being split.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I personally prefer the wii u myself. I play mine daily, though the wii is still plugged in. I've hacked the hell out of it with cbhc, regionhax, rednand, neek, virtual wii in general, virtual wii theme.

True, depending where you live, it may be more expensive or harder to find. In my area, I've seen Wii U and Wii around the same price, (0~30$ USD difference depending on luck/conditions) via craigslist/kijiji/facebook market. I would have spent the extra 30$ anyways for the Wii2HDMI cable.

Don't GC and Wii games have 480p output ? you are saying they output 720p/1080p when played on Wii U ?

Yes, the signal is 720p/1080p. Though it won't enhance the image Quality, I believe the Wii U uses Integer Scaling to fill in the screen, and according to some users its best to use 480p to get the best image quality.. (as apparently the wii u scaling is subpar)

Definitely an OG Wii. RVL-001 or 101, but the 001 is honestly better with it's built-in GC support. :yay:
(This is my first post here. I may be new here, but I do know quite a bit about Wii homebrew.)
