Best Buy is having a pretty nice deal on the Wii U, comes with 32GB version, Mario 3D land, DK Tropical Freeze, Nintendoland, and Smash Bros. for $360.

Is the Wii U worth it? What's your experience been?
Any idea if it will be hacked anytime soon? (play backup Wii U games, etc). Thanks.

It depends on if the games for it interest you. I think it's worth it. Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros., and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze are the three main ones I'm after. If none of the games interest you, then it won't be worth it for you.

On homebrew: I wouldn't hold my breath, beyond vWii anyway. Unless you find a Wii U running an older firmware.

if you like nintendo games then yes!!

the games your bundle comes with are good!

and a new Zelda will likely be coming out next year!

for 360$ I think its worth it. I only have a Wii U and plan to get a PS4 eventually too, but I won't get a PS4 until there are some games I want to play on it and the price drops. Maybe next year when Uncharted and FF XV come out I'll finally jump on a PS4.. but the Wii U seems to be the best value around. not to mention you could softmod the vWii and play the Wii/GC games too.

    I think so.

I'm buying one this christmas for:

    Nintendoland
    Wind Waker HD
    Mario 3D World
    Mario Kart
    Super Smash Bros
    Wonderful 101
    Bayonetta 1/2
    Wii Party U
    Donkey Kong
and then 2015 I'm really looking forward to Xenoblade, Zelda and whenever the new Fire emblem x shin megami game gets released

if it were my ONLY gaming console?? then no not a chance. but i do have a gaming pc, vita and 3ds. however the quality of the wii u's first party titles is ridiculous. however i'd edge towards a pc or even a ps4 (despite the lack of games, sony shows last gen they have the quality to produce some phenomenal titles) as i like sports game etc.

I'd say so and Smash alone makes it worth it.

These games (not counting any upcoming titles) are the ones I'd consider picking up:

    Exclusives:
    Bayonetta 2 (Special Edition)
    Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
    Lego City Undercover
    Mario Kart 8
    New Super Mario Bros. U
    Nintendo Land
    Pikmin 3
    Sonic: Lost World
    Super Mario 3D World
    Super Smash Bros.
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
    The Wonderful 101

    Multiplatforms:
    Batman: Arkham City (Armoured Edition)
    Bayonetta 1 (Special Edition)
    Mass Effect 3: Special Edition
    Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
    Need for Speed: Most Wanted
    One Piece: Unlimited World Red
    Rayman Legends
    Sniper Elite V2
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed: Special Edition
Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition
    Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Variety is indeed limited but it's your typical Nintendo so you either like it or you don't.

Its worth it if you like nintendo game or any exclusives that the Wii U gets. If your into to multi-platform, I think ps4 or xbox1 may be better. I bought the wii U at launch, I played it a lot intitally, nintendo lands was fun for a while. Other than some random times of checking eshop and playing nes remix, I havent really touched the wii u in probably a year.

To be fair tho smash bros and mario kart are somewhat recent releases and are very popular, neither game has ever interested me tho. My main reason to get wii u was Mario, zelda, metroid, etc...

    Thanks for the excellent list.

I personally wouldn't be too fond of the multi platforms as the PC variants are better apart from One Piece and MH3 (which is basically an exclusive).

Yeah, I wouldn't really recommend anyone to get multiplatforms on the Wii U because they tend to bring out the worst of the system.

Watch Dogs = Very low (14) & inconsistent (25-30) framerate and missing DLC content, plus not a well done port
Splinter Cell Blacklist = Loading screens are too long
Rayman Legends = GamePad makes it rather a nauseating experience
Sniper Elite V2 = Missing DLC and Online Play
Most Wanted = Framerate sometimes drops and you can see the game slowing down but after that it normalises

The only reason I own multiplatforms for Wii U is because some of them had a low print and are hard to get otherwise there's not much point to it.

This. I personally wouldn't recommend a Wii U to someone so they could play multiplats. PS4/XB1/PS3/360 is a better option for the time being. For collecting purposes the Wii U is interesting since even the most mundane games like Need for Speed: Most Wanted can become hard to find.

So is the Wii U worth it, then? Let's just say that Nintendo has been doing huge fan service lately with all the excellent games and exclusives. They tend to bring out polished content for the Wii U and that's why you would want to get a Wii U in the first place: Nintendo games. I'd say (being a kid who grew up with the NES) that this is the best time to be a Nintendo gamer. Take into account it's all in HD (a first for Nintendo), you have Off TV Play for when someone else is using the TV, there's tons of past gems to play through Virtual Console, you have a huge number of different controllers to choose from to suit your play (Wiimote, Wiimote + Nunchuk, Classic Controller, Wii U Pro Controller, Wii U GamePad, GameCube controller), it's backwards compatible with Wii games so you'll never really run out of games to play (and you can get some great games for super cheap)... and it's great value for a video game console.

I maybe preaching to the choir but I'd say yes it is worth it!

Nintendo has many great exclusives already and its only getting better with more nintendo games coming out for it within the next year. But only it depends on if you like the games which I personal love and prefer the Wii u over the ps4/xbone because I prefer the games and don't care for fps games...

I had this discussion with my boys a couple of months ago. Are you sure you wouldn't
rather have one of the other systems that are more powerful? Their response was "No they don't have any of the games we want to play."

It's about the experience, not the specs.

    Think bout this

    In specs

    7800 beat the NES

    Intelivision beat the 2600

    Jaguer beat the SNES

In fact the console with the best specs hasn't won since the 16 bit era

This statement is strongly supported by the fact that the GameCube was spec-wise ahead of the competition at the time, but the PS2 was the console to "win" that generation despite lower specs.

NGC was strong but the Original Xbox was even more and if Microsoft had kept it around till 2013 there'd still be a lot of great games for it but as it stands, it was an under appreciated console. Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict is such an awesome game but sadly I never had the chance to play it online when it was available, although the offline mode is really good too especially if you've got people who'd want to play it.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory's best console version is without a doubt the Original Xbox but the others are fine too, I love the game so much that I completed the 3DS version which is slightly different (they removed hidden/alternate paths & added the hints a la Conviction).

By the way, multiplatform games which are kind of hard to come by:

    - Sniper Elite V2
    - Most Wanted
    - One Piece: Unlimited World Red
    - Barbie: Dreamhouse Party
    - Phineas and Ferb: Quest for Cool Stuff
    - Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

Most of them are pretty good but avoid Barbie Dreamhouse Party unless you're a collector.

I wouldn't call it multiplatform per se, so it's available for the 3DS too and it's basically the same game, but the reason it's hard to come by is that Capcom doesn't care about home consoles for MH and this is highlighted by the fact MH4U is coming only to the 3DS.

Isn't MH3 also available on the PS3 or is it a different edition?

A brand new factory sealed from Amazon costs £46 eesh, while I've got it myself I haven't touched the game yet.

In general the WiiU seems to get dodgy ports of multiplatform games with a few exceptions. The WiiU ports of Need for Speed most wanted, Rayman Legends and Sonic Racing Transformed were deemed to be the best by Digital Foundry. There are some good eshop games worth checking out too Shovel Knight, Child of Light and Guacamelee come to mind here. With all that said depending on what games your interested in you might be better off with a PS4 or Xbone. There has been some progress in hacking the WiiU, but I wouldn't expect backup loaders anytime in the near future.
