If Trucha signing with Nintendo's key.bin is likely to become useless after a future Wii System update, then it would be prudent to sign my new channel with my own Wii key, rather than a public distribution key. I would presume that a NAND dump would provide my key and that I could load it into the Trucha Signer in order to create a channel which will not be susceptible to Nintendo's likely pending fix.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Also, I don't see any options in my Wii settings panel to prevent system updates. As I recall, it is normally necessary for me to instigate the update myself. Is this the case?

Thanks

I doubt the key will be the only overhaul they make.

If they're going to lock it down, they're not just going to fix one bug.

As for updates, most of them have been user initiated, but that's not to say they can't force one on you.

you are confused.

the common key.bin is only used to decrypt data.

trucha signing is not using it to sign but a flaw to sign them.

The common key is also used to encrypt data on the disc - if you replace one of the files then you must have the key to carry out the encryption required.

Thats why the release of it was very important - you couldn't change any program data on the disc until that point.

The Trucha signing bug is sort of related in that it works to sign the table of SHA values that need to be modified when data on the disc is changed.

Better think of the common key as MASTER KEY, all Wiis have it and need it to read a disc.

So... How do I use the key which is built into my Wii (and only my Wii) to sign new channels in the same way that Nintendo's channels are signed when they are downloaded?

I'd really like to read about how the Trucha exploit works as well. Mainly to find out what is likely to break in the future. Will it be that my current channels are disabled or merely that I will not be able to install new channels?

Happily, in Europe it's illegal for Nintendo to force a firmware update upon me. It never stopped Microsoft mind...

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.

@SylverReZ, atleast wiimmfii went fine although people only use it for Mario kart Wii

At least if they ban you for cheating, get another Wii. They're cheap as chips.

Remember when RiiShop was a thing?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
    not really
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
It got shutdown because somebody "accidentally" leaked the database for the amount of people using the beta.

RiiShop is the laziest way of downloading Wii games. Did somebody not think of this through?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
although i ended up accidentally changing my nand with no way of going back bc i didn't know you needed a gamecube controller to restore it (i have a wii minus/1.1, which doesn't have gamecube controller support)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, I think you're talking about the recovery mode that the SaveMii used, and also was to restore softbricked systems.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
If your NAND was hardbricked, then just buy another Wii. Or go with the dirty NAND flasher method.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and if i find the sd card i have my NAND backed up on, i can not only restore the NAND if i solder the right part in, but i can also put my NAND on dolphin, then i can play dolphin online, like PMEX Remix or MKWii Riibalanced
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    Brb
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, Oh yeah, that was a thing too. Dolphin does support Wiimmfi.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
yeah you just need to put your NAND backup with wiimmfi on it
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
ngl i feel like if a bunch of my friends have wiis and know how to get wiimmfi and back up their NAND, then we could do a PMEX Remix tournament
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
maybe even add UMVC3/DBFZ and make it a biathlon/triathlon
