Hardware Wii not region locked

The main reason you can't play games across different regions for like pal is, cause the tv's over here aren't made to display the correct signals. You might not be able to play pal games who cares jap is ntsc too, and that is all that really matters since the best things always come out of there.

Actually region locking is in place because manufacturers want to prevent importing to secure local profits.

Almost all modern PAL TVs can display 60Hz (NTSC), so if you were right that would mean everyone in PAL regions could play all of the NTSC games. But we can't because the Wii is region locked, as in Nintendo have designed the firmware so you can't play games from other regions, it has nothing to do with the fact that your TV can't display at the right frequency.

region lock doesn't mean playing NTSC games on your PAL TV ==''.....region locks means you stick a game in..and the console will go "ERROR: WTF, BUY GAMES IN YOUR OWN REGION"......instead of playing it in black and white =="

Off topic but I remember PS3 being hyped as being able to play any region games. Is that still true or did the manufacturers put a lock on it?

From what I've read, PS1 and PS2 games are still region locked when played on a PS3, but actual PS3 games are not. I don't own one, so don't consider this definite truth. (But I'm pretty sure we would've seen otherwise by now if it wasn't true.)

hmm, well, europe and north america has different HDTV standard, europe is DVB and north america is ATSC....but dont know if a television set can view both with component

Not quite true. These are methods that the signal is broadcast over, not how the HDTV displays them. I own a European HDTV that can perfectly display US 1080i and European 1080i, regardless of whether it's 50 or 60Hz.

Likewise, I receive BBC HD (excellent FTA HD channel!) and it's over DVB-S2, but the signal itself when displayed is an MPEG4 HD signal.

Why every company likes to rip the european off?

A bit off topic, why did Bill Gates decided to set Vista on $100 upgrade (min) and the same upgrade will go for £100. And what aload of bull*** when he said because the currency can go up or down. Not I will get Vista anyway.. But I think Bill Gates need to go back to study primary school maths lesson.

Anyway. while counting the currency, european usually pay the highest for games. I think that's the reason why they decided to have region locks. Games software and hardware are at least 1/3 cheaper in Asia / US.

if your TV supports NTSC, you will be able to play NTSC games or video, simply solution, otherwise they will be in black and white. Anyone with a modified PS2 or whatever console can prove that. So that bull**** TV equipments difference is rubbish.

Anyway, as a chinese living in the UK, I want a Japanese Wii as I fed up with the rubbish european sport games (god knows why they like sports or SIMS games, boring). I probably will grap one from HK at some point this year.. only selling around £120 there.. £50 pounds cheaper because of the strong pounds, thx a lot Bank of England. But I wished all Wii were region free or hopefully mod can be out sooner rather than later.

Had to find offical hentai on Nitendo games I would think. Notendo doesn't have Dead or Alive softporn games. Homemade hentai games are another story for japanese I guess. We are more hooked on RPG stuffs. They date real ppl in MMo, not date fake ppl on sims.
