IGN said:
Nintendo's latest Wii System Menu 4.2 update released earlier this week has caused quite a stir for many console owners.

The update was only intended to fend off piracy by disabling certain 'Homebrew' programs, or what Nintendo calls "unauthorized modifications." The update was not supposed to affect those with unmodified consoles. Here's what the official statement said:

"This update provides behind-the-scenes fixes that will not affect features but will improve the overall system performance."

"Because unauthorized modifications to save data or program files may impair game play or the Wii console, updating to Wii Menu version 4.2 will also check for and automatically remove such save data or program files."

Days later, however, Nintendo's forums have been flooded with users with unmodified Wiis experiencing issues after updating, such as freezing upon start-up, disc read errors, and even bricking the Wii entirely.

The best part is that the only real way to unbrick a system without sending it to the Nintendog is by "unauthorized system modification". This really just slays me.
lol so nintendo will just drive more people to the "unauthorized system modification"scene lol =D

Hm... one cant help but wonder what they are going to do to fix this.

Brick one Wii, get two free!

I think though, that for every Wii that's bricked from this method, we should be able to throw a brick through a window at Nintendo HQ. Or just be able to take one swing at Shingeru Miyamoto (who I'm pretty sure is a lifeless, unethical, and souless robot whose become victim to the "casual crowd") with cricket paddle.

some guy on the Nintendo forums said:
The brick happens when the update is writing to boot2, if there is any interruption (power loss, wifi loss, etc.) during the process the update will hang and when the Wii is rebooted there isn't a complete set of instructions on boot2 for it to know what to do.
