hi, i am sure that i was reading somewhere about a way to run wii backups without the use of a mod-chip, can anyone inform me to wether this is true and if it is then what are the pros, cons of using this method

Yes, this is true; yes you can play backups without a modchip. The cons are that not all games work, and loading times are usually about twice as long.

Con is limited compatibility, although it's improving quite fast. As well as 3x speed, meaning cutscenes will lag, and loading is pretty slow. If you don't mind that though, check it out.
