does the wii have an optical/digital co-ax out or is it crappy stereo with dolby PL II support like the GC - my receiver is going to waste with crap inputs

cheers

damn - wanted Dolby Digital, Xbox1 and ps2 has digital out, bloody nintendo being lazy again, PLII is ok but nowhere near as good as DTS or even DD

It's the same reason they didn't include HD video output, they wanted to cut down on system costs. But that's the way it is -- if you want high-end graphics and sound, go PS3 or Xbox 360.

If you're really, really lucky or you know how to make your own PCBs, the future MAY unveil something like an external sound card via USB for Wii so you can get 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound on the Wii. However, this is unlikely, baseless conjecture, and only for those who are "optimists"

That'd be completely impossible. A USB soundcard would need drivers, and I don't see Nintendo writing external audio drivers into their firmware anytime soon. Your best bet is not that, but that one of the pins on the connector that hasn't been determined yet is S/PDIF, or that there is a way to connect to the traces of the sound chip in the Wii to take the digital audio before it reaches the DAC.
