Here's a little tale to explain my question:

About 2 years ago I got my PS3 (Motorstorm 80 GB ed.) and all was well for about a week. I got a defective model and got a swap for another Motorstorm edition. It lasted until about a week ago where it froze mid-game in Army of Two and upon resetting it, it refused to read any discs now. I called Best Buy up and now I can only get the downgraded piece of crap 80 GB with only 2 ports, a downgraded image card and worst of all, no PS2 compatibility. So, since I'm forced into this, I figured if I can't play my PS2 games on my PS3, i figured I'd get into the homebrew and modding scene of the PS2 (always good to expand your boundaries).

I need your opinion guys/girls. What should I get. I've heard of some methods, but am not sure on what is considered "the best". I'm looking to spend minimum cash though. So, if you don't mind, throw your idea into the ring.

I'd softmod it. Modding on the PS2 is WAY to hard! Plus I've never had a game that doesn't work with ESR yet!

I'm surprised I haven't seen any mention of swapping yet, especially since I hear it preached about so much. I think I read the thread about Memor32 before, but didn't some say they are rare and expensive now? Also, since i'm new in this field, can someone give me a definition on ESR?

EDIT: Found a video of Memor32 in action on on of the posted threads.

I'm not sure what his disc is though. Is it required?

ESR will fool the ps2 into thinking the disk is a dvd video disk

you have to make a iso image of the disk
run a patch on the disk
burn the patched iso

Boot off Free MC Boot (latest version is 1.7) memory card
put in the patched disk in and loads up after screen shows ESR Screen and flashs all sorts of colors and boots

The swapping stuff is out-dated. ESR and FREE_MC_BOOT are just like Memor32 but free

.

The best way is to have the old fat system with the network adapter and a hard drive.
Loads games quicker and don't have to worry about waring out your lazer.

Alright, it sounds settled then. ESR it is. What exactly are all the parts I need? Downloadable stuff and stuff I need in hand. I have a phat version (can look up the number later)

OK, I'm going to need a small tut on this. I'm not sure what are the full list of things I need, nor of what I should do when I have all the items needed. Anyone mind giving a fellow Temp-er a hand?

Well, although I am still very much in the dark on FreeMcBoot and ESR, I figured I'd at least download FreeMcBoot to get a start. And I've already ran into a problem. The download link is broken. I'm not sure if FreeMcBoot (or ESR for that matter) fall into the "Don't upload" category, but if not, can someone provide me with a copy?

the site that hosts the file is down
I will upload the latest files for you

Free McBoot v1.7
uLaunch Elf v4.29
ESR rev.9b
ESR Disk Patcher GUI v0.24a

I actually found a download a second ago. It contained:

FMCB 1.7
ESR 7a,7b,8,8a,9,9a,9b
ESR Disc Patcher
ULaunchelf 4.12
HDLoader
SMS

Which should I use, yours or the one I found?

EDIT: I tried moving the files you gave in the rar file to my desktop and Windows Explorer stopped working. It restarted and now I can't make new folders, nor restore things out of my Recycle Bin.

EDIT: Fixed it. Now, it says that I need a way to boot ELFs on the PS2 and they mentioned a modchip or Swap Magic. Since I obviously don't have those, what are other methods of booting ELFs on the PS2?

AR Max's. You can get one used for like $5. I think all AR's work (if you can't move files on it then you'll need a fat PS2).

I have a fat PS2 (not sure on the version). Also, I just noticed the expansion bay was empty. Is this where HD users put there's in? Also, my friend either has a Codebreaker or Gameshark. Is there anyway to use one of those so I don't have to buy a AR Max?

Before I can follow the tutorial though, I'm going to need a boot method for ELFs. Does anyone know if those 2 I mentioned earlier have a way to load ELFs?
