The original Gameboy lasted from 1989 to 1999 (2002 if you count Gameboy color which was more of an update than a new system), so it could stick around a while, although with the DS around I figure it'll just be a trickle of GBA games for a while, not really anything major.

The DS however, I predict will be around for a very long time. I see no reason for Nintendo to bother replacing it since it's arguably the most successful game system and they have no real competition (by which I mean PSP sales aren't putting a dent in their DS sales.) About 1 in 6 people in Japan owns a DS.

I'm playing more GBA games (on my Micro) than I am DS games right now.
I'm having hella-fun with Ghouls & Ghosts and Rhythm Tengoku.

The GBA Micro really rocks, it brought new life to my GBA games.

I think it's already dead, in the sense that no one in their right state of mind would get a GBA instead of a DS, and no company wants to make games for a system that no one buys, of course the GBA still can offer plenty with the huge game library it has, but then the DS can play GBA games just fine so...

R.I.P GBA

Yeah, I can agree with you there.

I play my Micro much more than my DS Lite.
The library of good games on the GBA is triple to that of the DS.

I'm enjoying Pokemon Red, Namco Musuem, and about to play Golden Sun.

GBA shall never die.

Aw, don't be like that, man.

People won't get a GBA instead of a DS, but they could still get one alongside the DS. You can't get GBA multiplayer on the DS, and the DS is too big and bulky when you're using it for GBA games only. And it's always nice to feel the games the way they were meant to be played. The screen could be better, though

Sure, the DS GBA compatibility is good enough for most, and but there's something to be said about nostalgia.

I totally agree!!

But this topic should really be a poll...

anybody heard about any new nintendo handheld hardware yet? I know there was talk about the gameboy evolution, but I'm pretty sure that was scrapped quite a while ago.

that's when gba will die for me. when nintendo gets out of their 'crazy hardware' phase. Nintendo kind of 'fibbed' about future gba support when they released the DS and it's still rubbing me wrong. And DS has some really good titles these days--quite a few really. But for overall design, I miss gba's simplicity and I think many DS titles would have been just as happy on GBA.

How many people really gave up on GBA because DS was 'better' versus the number of people who had to move on because there was no more game support? I know which of those two systems I'd rather be stranded on an island with for the rest of my life. Even if I can't 'blow into a microphone' anymore.

no one in their right mind? i already know several people (5) that have went out and bought a GBA and declared it superior to a DS. none of my friends wants to carry around a brick of a DS. it might be cool for the younger generation - but no one with a sense of style or maturity would bother with a DS for portability.

but - the overwhelming majority of the market are much younger than my friends. They (well their parents) have the money, and they don't mind playing/showing off a DS. so yes - R.I.P. GBA to the mass market.

hopefully the true gamers will keep it alive.

But playing GBA games feels a lot better on a GBA than DS. Its feels like playing a SNES on PC emulators for me, I need to play those games on the controller that they were created for.

When I play GBA it has to be on a GBA.

Yip god bless them!

I still find it hard to comprehend that people prefer using PSX controllers on GC.

Carrying around a GBA Micro or SP is so much better than carrying your DS Lite around.
They're lighter, smaller, and no touch screen needed (as in, I don't have to use my stylus).
(Plus, I think that the SP's shell is harder than the DS Lite shell)

The GBA will never die as long as this community is around and developers continue to develop Homebrew games for it.

ooooh golden sun! I really enjoyed that one! was my first RPG, i am now working my way through zelda PH. never was a pokemon fan, so advance wars is the only reason I fire up my gba games. and warlocked is the only reason i fire up my gba (man i cant believe i spent $300 on that thing with supermario advance...)
