The average lifecycle of video game consoles and handhelds in the modern era seems to be around 7 years. Nintendo was one of the main players in establishing the pattern of release between consoles and handhelds, where consoles are released in the middle of a handheld's lifecycle and vice versa. I'd place the first announcements of the 3DS' successor to come around mid-to-late 2017 for a 2018 release.

I'd be much more interested if Nintendo let WiiU die and focus on 3DS.
The 3DS have it's noticeable flaws, we all know, but it's been the portable that have been the focus of third parties.
WiiU never succeeded and never will, in the best hypothesis it can achieve N64 numbers.
If Nintendo focus on 3DS they could make it sell greatly, although it's numbers are not comparable with DS,
it is already selling good and could achieve a lot more.
Bring us GBA VC, SNES 3D classics, help localize japanese titles like the Dragon Quest Ones,
bring back the 2D Metroid, F-Zero, Starfox. Give sequels to Mario 3D Land and Kid Icarus.
This is just from the top of my head, there is so much more that could and should be done
