Hello, I recently got into fire emblem heroes and really enjoyed it. I'm curious as to which fire emblem is the best to start out with on the 3ds. I've heard really good things about awakening, and the new echoes game looks pretty good too. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Fire Emblem: Awakening
If you play Echoes: Shadows of Valentia first, you might get used to its mechanics which does not exist in any other game- so I recommend playing the one that will teach you all of Fire Emblem games' mechanics.
You might also start with Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright. However, story is branched out, and to fully understand it, you most likely will need to get all 3 versions of the game.
I also recommend you to play on Classic mode- where if your units die, they're dead for good. This especially helps if you later on want to play the older Fire Emblem games that doesn't have a mode where fallen units come back.

I don't know about that. Awakening is in my opinion great.
    Also for the OP:
Fire Emblem has one of the worst fanbase ever. Everyone will try to poop on other's favorite Fire Emblem game. Welcome.

    I recommend the following order, but haven't looked further back than the GBA era;

    - FE(7, GBA): Blazing Sword. The introduction "Lyn Mode" can be kind of annoying the first time, but just keep at it. Also, this game can be brutally difficult at points and is kind of unforgiving if you miss stuff.
    - FE6(GBA: translated); storywise, FE7 is a prequel to FE6. You can see where it all started, this game's mechanics are simpler at points (example; there are no other objectives than "seize throne), and it literally FLOODS you with units. It is fun, but not perfect, but I don't recommend it as a starter.
    - FE8 (GBA); You could play this first or second if you want too. It isn't as long as the above, the story is isolated, and the class mechanism near perfect imo.
    - Path of Radiance (NGC)
    - Radiant Dawn (Wii)
    - Shadow Dragon (NDS)
    - New Mystery (NDS: Translated)
    - Awakening
    - Echoes
    - Fates

eta: the 16 bit games never get old; it is what made FE big in the west. You can play all three seperately. The Radiant branch is really interlocked when it comes to story, the Cube game is the better one I tihnk, but the story can leave you dissatisfied.
Am on the fence when it comes to the DS games, though I think New Mystery far outshines Shadow Dragon. For the 3DS games, it is a toss up between Awakening and Echoes as to what is the better starter. Echoes is highly unconventional, but it does have a great focus on strategic aspects without being bothered by too many perks of the game. FE7 for example, if you are on your first playthrough, can have you branch off into bad decisions and making the game extremely hard in the end; promotion items and growth rates are hidden if you don't use guides.

I discovered Fire Emblem last year and played Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (for the GBA) sporadically. Then I got a New 3DS earlier this year and tried Fire Emblem Fates. I started with Birthright but the maps and the characters bored me after playing ten chapters or so. I found the characters unappealing and I always felt over-levelled (and I only tried one extra chapter every two normal ones or so.) Then I tried Conquest and found my place.

Even on Easy and Casual, Conquest's maps are more entertaining than any map that I had played on Birthright, and, more importantly, the characters are funnier and way more interesting. After playing (and succeeding at) the first eighteen chapters, I started a new game on Hard and Classic, and I am really enjoying the challenge.

In my opinion, you should try Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest to experience two classic takes on Fire Emblem on two distinct gaming eras. Even on Easy, I think that they both embody the spirit of what Fire Emblem is. The game may be very challenging at times, but it is not unfair. Enjoy!

What's the problem with that fanbase?
Note, I'm not contesting, I genuinely ask because I don't know.

The fanbase was so toxic when the game released the mods of their subreddit shut it down. The fanbase is much better now than what it was at launch, it was basically a subreddit full of people cussing out hello games and demanding their money back.

Awakening is the go to recommendation for new fans, since its the game that pretty much 'saved' the series, and its very casual friendly. From there you can branch out.

Since you only have the choice between 'three' games, awakening is a good place to start and personally my favourite in series. Fates wasn't that good in my opinion, and it was a waste of time I felt, however some seem to enjoy it more than others so you could give it a go. I personally recommend Echoes after playing the original form, unless you're only willing to go for 3DS ports.

I'm enjoying awakening so far, even though I'm only into the third chapter. Rally attacks have been very useful throughout my playthrough, something I kinda wish they would do with heroes. Also it's kinda weird recognizing all the characters in the game because of fire emblem heroes yet still not knowing a whole lot about each one.

    My recommendations:
1: FE9 Path of Radiance (GCN)
    2: FE10 Radiant Dawn (Wii)
3: FE11 Shadow Dragon (DS) [remake of FE1, this time with a prologue introducing wtf is happening and who characters are]
4: FE15 Echoes (3DS) [remake of FE2, occurs concurrently to FE1/ Shadow dragon, I believe)
5: FE12 New Mystery Of The Emblem (DS) remake of FE3, [first FE with an "avatar" unit]
5: FE7 Blazing Sword [A.K.A simply "Fire Emblem"] (GBA)
    6: FE6 Binding Blade (GBA)
    7: FE8 Sacred Stones (GBA)
8: FE4 Genealogy of the Holy War (SNES) [I'd recommend this first IF it wasn't so damned hard]
    9: FE5 Thracia 776 (SNES)
10: FE13 Awakening (3DS) [occurs in the same timeline as FE 1-3, {including remakes} but MUCH later]
I recommend playing them all, in that order. you'll have an excellent grasp of the storyline and gameplay mechanics by the time you get to FE7, and if playing the SNES games doesn't kill you from the difficulty, you'll be in good shape. if they DO get..... unfriendly, just skip to awakening.

EDIT plus there are tons of people who make the GBA/ SNES versions playable on 3DS. and NO, you don't 100%require a N3DS, either. just search around for "That ISO Site" or Pm a user here. there's bound to be someone here that stuff like that. Me? I need a new pair of shoes before I can Ccimb waterfalls.

    SHIT/BAN LIST
    1. FE14 Fates. (3DS) literally the only two things that are good about this game are the soundtracks, and the backgrounds in battle. story is abysmal, characters are terrible and flavorless, many things make absolute zero sense whatsoever. I buy copies of this game just so I can burn them, like I did with the atrocity that was Superman 64.

I wouldn't even go so far as to buy copies of that game tbh.
