What is Hatsune Miku?

I've seen this girl in avatars, signatures, refrences and puns, all over various forums.
I gave a quick lookover in the Wikipedia article, and all I could understand is that it is software for computers, specifically for voice simulation.
If so, why do people have her everywhere? I did see that she has got a few video games featuring her, but other than that, what's so special?
It's been bothering me forever.

There are some people that hate her, because they think that songs should be singed by real people, but even they think that she is technologically amazing.

My opinion is very simple: As long as it sounds nice, I don't care who or what produced the sound I am hearing.
