It has been added to TomGer's SDfiles, and from what I heard, it saves crash reports to the sd card instead of deleting them like dreport did. Does this mean that crashes are no longer reported to Nintendo? And what is the purpose of saving them on the SD?

For online, just wait. Just stay offline until SciresM (Atmosphere) understand telemetry and your console can send correct safe messages.

With crash reports, Ninty know your console is hacked and ban you, so just wait.

To actually answer the question, not like above did, creport is the switch's crashreport sysmodule.
What about the modified version included in SDfiled 7.2? Does it prevent Nintendo from seeing crash reports? If not, what does it do and why is it better than dreport?

crash reports aren't the only reason Nintendo bans. even if there weren't crash reports Nintendo would still know your console is hacked as soon as you connect the switch to internet

It prevents the module from booting up and dumps crashes to sd instead.

That's not true.
For piracy maybe, for normal homebrew, in general no.

actually it's 100% true. crash reports or no crash reports, Nintendo knows, piracy, homebrew, doesn't matter, end results are all the same, ban.
it seriously can't be true unless there are other reasons N won't ban (or hasn't) some consoles on CFW. for example, since Fusée came out, I've been running cfw, trying to be careful to not have my switch shut off ever (which has happened twice in 4 months) and I play online pretty much everyday mk8 and resident evil revelations 2. no ban yet.

What do you mean exactly by: "trying to be careful to not have my switch shut off ever"
