Casual gaming is when you got a controller in one hand and your arm is slung over the chair and you're just glancing at the TV like 'meh, I could be playing this or maybe I could not'. Maybe you play a level or so..

I will have to look up some old articles but a couple of years back when people were trying to figure out how many people of what sex and age played games the terms were remarkably different. Granted the net result was "how to we classify people that play solitaire?" but the tone varied somewhat from today.

Hardcore: Someone who makes a hobby out of gaming; plays many diverse games, all different game play and story genres; really considers the elements of a game and how they come together (game play, graphics, music, story, so on); would classify video games as an art form.

When attempting to consider things I have headed down similar paths and with reference to other fields that does seem rather apt. However where I can be reasonably sure a film type would know what a Dutch angle (a fundamental of cinematography) is I am not so sure I could ask "what is the prisoner's dilemma?" (a fundamental problem in game theory) and reliably get the correct answer. This may or may not be a problem of computer games being both rather limited and the field itself being rather understudied (something I have been considering a lot in recent months) but I reckon it is worth taking note of.

Is the game that's casual, or is it the gamer themself?

Game can be aimed at casual/hardcore audience but can be played in both.
For example cookie clicker can be played like you only click some, then buy some upgrades, get several of each buildings. Or you can build a spreadsheet calculating efficient strategy in buying upgrades/buildings.
