Hacking What IS a Custom IOS?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I am having trouble understanding how to install the backup loader.
I don't know what people are talking about with Custom IOS stuff. :S
Just wondering as (at least for me) its kinda hard to understand.
Also does the Backup Loader support GameCube isos?
