PS1/2 What exactly IS a .ELF file?

memor team just mde one for the memor32 memory card w/ usb port that allows you to boot back ups just by putting the memory card in the memoy slot..basicaally a modchip but in memory card format..

Yes, an ELF file is basically a homebrew program.

Like how DOL files can be used to load homebrew on a GameCube (or Wii in GC mode).

Not always. I load my ELFs from a CD and memory card.
I don't even have a HDD for my PS2.

a .elf file is the ps2 equivilant to a .exe file for the pc

im using a HDLoader.elf to play games off my hardrive :-)

Also, I was under the impression that these could only be used with either an HDD or using the Memory Card exploit... because I know there's an elf that allows you to play PS1 games... so if I can get that working with my Swap Magic, that would be wonderful!

ELF's can also be launched with chips , I know on my matrix infinity I can hold R1 (I think , or was it R2) , to launch stuff of memory card

ELF files as stated above, are executable files. All programs that run on PS2 use them. Including games.
