A spare gamecube. Any interesting mods I can do to it? Got it off of someone years ago for about $10..if I remember correctly there was a laser issue, but I think I fixed it.

Making it portable seems like a good idea to me.
It's been done, looks pretty cool too. I say make it portable and then sell it for a shit ton of cash.
Well if I made a GameCube portable, I'd keep it.
Same here, until a there comes along a handheld that can handle a GC emulator.
Hopefully the 3DS/PSVita would handle it.
They can't.

They sell for about $1000.

Or for those of you who live in the Pacific Ocean, 1000 CLAMS!

Implying there is an official price for these.
If you find them for $1000, it is only because the seller him/herself decided to sell it for $1000.

For example, my friend got in contact with someone who could make one. He charges about 1/8th of the price you mentioned, maybe less.

Well...professionally done, someone would do this for you for maybe $600-$800 if you provide the components. DIY sell theirs for about $1000, god knows why but they do. So either way you're getting $500+ monies for about 2-5 hours of work depending on how good you are and which tutorial you're following.

According to my friend, the person who'd do this only requests you to pay for the costs of the screen that's going to be used.

So he's very generous? I'm not saying you're wrong, just that that happens a lot more than anything as it takes a lot of time.

I think that might be the reason, yes.

Post some pics of these Portable Gamecubes.
One of my favorites:

and a better, real-world unmodified looking one:

If done right these things could sell for a fortune! Only problem is, the market for them is very small, the battery life is very small (1-3 hours depending on the quality and size of the battery) and really they're cheaper to make then to buy. Only problem is making it look good as you have to make your own case/make it fit into a premade case. For example, the second image I posted the case sorta looks like bad.
