I was wondering about what causes a DS to brick.

Those are the only 2 Trojans that brick the DS.

A fail install of flashme will also brick your DS.

Another way to do so,but not by damaging the internal memory are flashcarts like N5 (R4 clone) that blows the fuse,making it useless.

Just to add, flashme add recovery function at very beginning of install. Only if you are unlucky enough to fail in this part you will have an unrecoverable brick.
