If you do go for the Compaq laptop law listed, you might also want to get a laptop cooler. It probably won't need it at first, but after a few months you'll prolly start noticing it getting heat issues (at least the fan will be noisier than before). It has a 2.1Ghz AMD Athlon II and a ATI HD 4250, according to HP's site.

I call BS on the "this laptop PC's blazing speeds and fast operation will simply blow you away" part in the description, but meh. For a first laptop, you could do worse (like getting underpowered 7" netbooks).

If possible, look for a laptop with Core i3. There should be a few in the $400-500 range.

Why does it have to be ebay?

You're buying USED then. You don't get the official warranty or support, so if it breaks you're out of luck, nobody has to fix it for you.

Free-500... good luck haha! I say get an HP DV4 series laptop, sometimes they hit like 550, a little more than your budget but just great for anything. I own a DV4 1540 and I bought it for 550, works great!

Not exactly but eBay is full of people sellers and a few shops and can be confusing and mix ups/scams can occur, whereas buying from a shop, that will be a rarity and fix quickly.

Sims 3, not too demanding a game, a simple Dual Core should run it fine, if you have Integrated Graphics then about 3GB Memory, about 250GB Hard Drive for lotsa space for games, pics and Music.

An Intel Centrino will be just fine for that game. I'm not sure about a Celeron, those things are absolute shit, and I don't even think they make them for laptops.

A Centrino is not a CPU, but it can contain a CPU (And usually, if not, always do)

If you want lower end laptop. Get a dell from dell.com. They are very generic computers and you get what you pay for. The cheapest laptop (not minis) is more than enough to run most games.

Correction: the cheapest laptop (not minis, aka netbooks, or most CULV laptops) currently on the market (i.e. made in the last 3 years or so) is more than enough to run most games (assuming that you don't need lots of 3D mapping and texturing like in almost all modern shooters).

Or, to refine that down to its simplest meaning, get a machine that's good enough to meet the minimum specs of the game you want to play.
