Hacking Wad regions

I've been wondering for a long time, what is the deal with WAD regions? I have NTSC-U Wii, can I install a JAP WAD on my system and play it? I know I can enable the region free hack in preloader but do I have to do anything else? I'm mainly scared of bricking. Also, should I make the WAD region free using PC software first or will that even matter considering I have preloader?

ive never really looked into it
but i'd imagine its the same thing

ive never enable region free channel hack but some ntsc-j wad's works fine [gradius rebirth]

so i guess there is no risk of a brick? I thought that's where banner bricks come from, out of region wads installed.

banner bricks come from corrupted wad's
usually a bad banner size or music file or something.

always have preloader installed before installing channels!

Never used Region free hacks but generally I just use freethewads on a japanese wad myself before putting it on my wii. If anything though i'd at least install preloader or if nothing else test it out on an emulator like Dolphin.
