is a wad just a pointer to an application?

i'm confused because i installed a wad for usb loader 1.5 in sd:/apps/usbloader and then replaced the boot.dol in sd:/apps/usbloader with usb loader gx and the channel still works fine (it points to usb loader gx now).

i thought wad's contained all the information to run the app without having to use the SD card.

EDIT: hmm...now that i think about it i installed a forwarder using the wad tool. so i guess i would need the SD card in if it's just a forwarder. is that right?

looks like you installed a forwarder wad.
You will need the sd card in the wii in order to use it.

There are wads that have the loader built into it so theres no need for the sd card.

Heres a link to the usbloader GX one

http://wii.spiffy360.com/loader.php

That link has just the dol file if you want it.
Also has the wad channel already made and a forwarder wad.

Can I know what's the different between the forwarder wad and channel wad? Seems after install them both will show on the main menu and able to run the USBLOADER GX without go to HBC, I just don't know the difference between them.

Thanks

The forwarder needs the boot.dol in SD:/apps/usbloader_gx/(boot.dol here)
The normal channel doesn't need the SD card to be inserted with the boot.dol

All a forwarder does is loading a boot.dol in a certain place on the sd card

Thanks dude.

Are they both safe? I have no problem to keep a SD card at the wii. I just try to understand the difference and advantage/disadvantage in my scenario.

Thanks

Yes they are safe to install (if your not sure, install preloader/bootmii)
The forwarder is used when an app has a lot of updates, so in this case its maybe the best choice

Gotcha. Seems the channel is install the APP to the NAND directly. I will prefer the forwarder as you mentioned the USBLOADER etc keeps update frequently. I don't want to make too many changes to NAND.

Appreciate all your input. Let me read around for choose a best forwarder for USB/HD LOADER solution.
