Hacking vWii need for Patched IOS80?

Can anyone explain simply what the need for a patched IOS80 is? Is it only to run vWii VC titles off the SD card? If so that's not something I care about doing anyhow. I saw older guides didn't mention this step but newer ones do with a warning. I don't want to patch this if I'll never have a need for it.
