I have a 320GB external HDD connected to my Wii U with a USB Y-cable (it is actually a HDD enclosure, can’t remember what brand or where I bought it). I use it to load Wii and GC games, with Nintendont and USBloaderGX. Sometimes it shuts down randomly. One example being after I quit a game, when I return to USBloaderGX to start another game, it tries to initialise the HDD, but it can’t, and it starts counting down “Waiting for HDD; Press B to cancel” until I unplug it and plug it in again. It never disconnects in the middle of a game, it sometimes happens when I boot an app that uses USB storage. Strangely enough this never happens on my PC, but it happens on both my Wii U and my old Wii.
Does anyone know how to prevent the HDD from shutting down?

If you haven't already done so, try disabling HDD sleep mode, did a quick search and found this old post HERE.

Now, I don't know if this filters down to vWii mode, but worth a shot.

If you have already done the above, only thing I can think of is that the WiiU doesn't like USB controller in the hdd enclosure your using.
