I have a two softmodded Wii's and was considering softmodding my WiiU's vWii. I currently use my Wii for Wii ISO's+Physical, GC ISO's+Physical, Retro Emulation, and eShop games via emuNAND using Neek. The only channels I have installed on the real NAND are emu channel forwarders.

Are there any benefits to softmodding the vWii over the actual Wii? The first benefit that stands out to me is the WiiU's native HDMI support. But does the vWii load anything faster? Or positively affect the compatibility of any games?

Are there things that a softmodded Wii can do that a softmodded vWii can not?

I was considering using my one of my Wii's current USB HDD's. Would the general file/folder structure need to be changed for vWii? Are there any Apps/Files that I'd have to worry about not being safe on the vWii?

Would I be able to use my current emuNAND on the vWii, booting through Neek?

I feel like I have more questions that I'm not remembering, though these are probably the most important. :P
Sorry if most of these have already been asked before. Thanks in advance for any help/answers.

A WBFS formated drive will work on vWii and won't give you a format disk nag when wiiu boot with it connected.

WBFS format is unreliable and has been deprecated a long, long time ago. OP is probably using a FAT32 formated drive, and this will cause a nag, but it's easy to fix.

-No. The vWii does not lose or gain any compatibility/speed as opposed to the normal Wii.

-Yes. Anything that used the native game cube controller and memory card ports will not work on WiiU. Such as GBA-Link and other special GameCube accessories in Nintendont. You can buy a USB to GameCube controller adapter for Nintendont if you're like me and refuse to give up the GameCube controller. Also, you cannot play games burned to dvds on wii U. Just can't.

-Yes, you can use the same hard-drive (as long as it is self powered or has a USB-Y Cable) and it will work fine in vWii mode. BUT, when you boot up the WIIU and you have that drive connected, it's going to ask you every time if you want to format that drive to the WIIU format. The only work around for this is UStealth. A simple program that "hides" your drive and making the popup stop. However if you go this route, it might limit your comptability with some homewbrew apps....USB loader GX and Nintendont are compatable but I am not sure about other homebrew, emulators etc. Your other option would be to only plug the drive in once you boot up vWii Mode.

That being said, I HIGHLY recommend you just get up to date on the state of the WIIU homebrew. You can pretty much do EVERYTHING you want on the vWii FROM the WIIU menu. Including launch wii homebrew, and inject wii/gamecube games right onto your wiiu menu, eliminating the need for two drives. I personally use a 1TB hard drive that holds all of my WIIU, WII and gamecube games. And then a 64GB sd card for everything else. I never even touch vwii mode anymore. I personally think 2 drives connected the wiiU is clunky and more trouble than it's worth.

Not sure. I don't mess around with emunand stuff. I'm pretty sure this guide has your answer though.

Does the adapter recognize the GameCube's analog trigger functions?

Is it just an annoying pop up that I can say "No" to, or does it prevent me from moving forward until I format?

So that means it can run retro emulators designed for Wii? -- Also you mentioned injecting games... Are you installing full Wii/GC games directly to the WiiU nand? If yes, aside from the obvious storage size limitations, are there also installed channel limitations like on the Wii's real Nand?

Thanks a lot for all of your answers.

-Yes. Highly recommend this one

Drive format popup
-You can press No and move on. Beware though, if you accidentally press yes, you’re going to lose your entire drive.

Injecting retro emulators/full games

-Yes. With this amazing tool you can inject any Wii homebrew, vWii NAND title, Gamecube game, or Wii game into your WIIU nand or WIIU formatted hard drive. For Wii homebrew and vwii nand titles it basically just acts as a forwarder and saves you a few clicks. However you will need to mod the WiiU side before you can use this. And As far as channel limitations....I believe there is a 300 title limit.

That's pretty cool! I didn't know WiiU softmodding had progressed this far.

Is there a WiiU version of CleanRip so that I could backup my own disc's?

both of which work well in potplayer

amd is a bit cheaper though
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Cheaper and they are less stingy with the RAM not a big issue now but I can imagine in a yard or two things might be different

    Year not yard lol

the vram is one advantage when it comes to AI but ends up being slower even with that and really AI is the only use case that needs more than 12gb vram right now

    Interesting lol

I think I watched a video where two games at 4K where eating just over 16GB of RAM and it's the one case where the 7900XT and XTX pulled ahead (minus RTX of course)
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
So my opinion is that they could age a bit better in the future, and maybe AMD will continue improving them via drivers like they tend to do. No guarantee there but they have done it in the past. Just a feeling I have.

cyberpunk at 4k without DLSS/fidelityfx *might* exceed 12gb

but that game barely runs at native 4k
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think it was some newer games and probably poorly optimized PS4 or PS5 ports
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
they definitely will age better but i feel dlss might outweigh that since it looks about as good as native resolution and much less demanding
    +1

When I played Cyberpunk on my old 2080 Ti it sucked lol

AMD could introduce something comparable to DLSS but nvidia's got a lot more experience with that
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
least amd 7xxx has tensor cores which the previous generations didn't so there is the potential for AI upscaling
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
They have FSR or whatever it's called and yeah it's still not great
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
so AMD seem to finally be starting to take AI seriously
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Oh yeah those new 8000 CPUs have AI cores built in that's interesting
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Maybe they plan on offloading to the CPU?
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Would be kinda cool to have the CPU and GPU working in random more
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Tandem even
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i think i heard of that, it's a good idea, shouldn't need a dedicated GPU just to run a LLM or video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the nvidia shield tv has AI video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
LLMs can be run on cpu anyway but it's quite slow
