VLC problem: adding subtitles to original DVD.

I'd like to watch a new Portuguese film on DVD but the only subtitles on the DVD are in French, which I don't master well to watch a more than 3h opus. The DVD plays well on VLC, it makes me select the French subtitles, also the English one after I've added them but they don't show when I'm starting the film. Any suggestions what I can do? Thank you.

Rip the DVD and place the SRT in the same directory. Only thing I can think of to do. Make sure that the subtitle file is named the same as the movie file.

Thank you for the suggestion, with a rip it worked.
