Ok, now I'm pissed. I created a code from scratch, for Max HP for Neptune in rebirth 3. and it worked.... until I shut down the game and restarted it. Then it went back to its default HP.
I'm thinking it has nothing to do with the cheats.

A fair amount of RPGs use two different segments of data for stats. You usually have one for your permanent stats, then another for equipment. Some may even have a third for buffs/debuffs, but that's usually handled by a modifier digit and an AND function, so it's rarer.
You most likely found the equipment/ temporary stats segment, which is an easy mistake to make.
Personally, if the equip/temp stats segment works like I want it to, I prefer to use that one for two reasons: 1.) If you turn the code off, your stats return to their legitimate status. I don't really like permanently modifying stats, but that's just me. And 2.) Every once in a while, you'll find a game that breaks if you do the wrong things with your stats. You might kill something you're not supposed to, or lock yourself out of something.
Trillion: God of Destruction is a good example. There was a battle I was supposed to lose, but since I'd mucked about with stats and junk, nothing could touch me most of the time, and even when it did, some perk I'd gotten would just absorb the damage I'd received and add it back to my health.
Best way I've found to get your permanent stats codes is to first find your experience code. Preferably a quick level up code. Unequip everything, then go kill some stuff. While doing that, search for your max health (or whatever stat). The one that only increases as you level, but never decreases. Typically, once you find that one value, your other permanent stats should be in the area surrounding it.
