Hacking Virtual Console / Wii Ware

Sincere apologies if this question is in the wrong forum, I really wan't sure which is the correct one.

Last weekend I finally did some more of the appallingly tedious chore that is turning the 'VIP' scratch panels from bought games into stars and then into Wii points.
I have never 'spent' Wii points, and always aimed to get Paper Mario, then Sin & Punishment (N64).
I first thought I would google 'virtual console' to see what else is worthwhile before doing so.
In the search results, there were torrents for many Virtual console games and Wii Ware.
If I was to obtain them via torrent, do I just copy them onto an SD card and they will work in the Wii?

Search for Wad installer, you use it to install VC games from Wii. You can't just copy them to your card and install them Wia the Wii menu (that would be stupid Nintendo).

I followed your advice, got as far as 'Twilight Princess hack', downgrading firmware etc , and decided to leave it there.

I was hoping that the answer would be 'non-invasive' (such as by using a flash cart with the DS, no effect on the console itself)

Anyway, I have enough points for the two games I wanted, plus a backlog of unplayed games on various consoles, so I have more than enough gaming and wouldn't want to do anything to the Wii that could stop my kids from playing on it (given my low level of competence and correspondingly high probability of screwing something up!) .

To install VC Games and WiiWare games for free you would just have to put the wad installer and the downloaded wad files on the SD card. Then run Zelda with the Twilight Hack and the wad installer would start. After installing the games you wouldn't notice any difference. No new channels or not working games.
As far as I know there is no other way to install downloaded VC Games (except installing the HBC which is not needed but makes such things easier).
