Using ssd over hdd for usb loader gx any disadvantages? I ordered a y cable but due to the canada post strike I may not get it for a long time. I know you may not notice difference in load speed between the two but are there any other disadvanges. Most people use HDD for it I know that ssd use less power and may not need a y cable. I'd like to hear people's experiences if anything was worse. I am using a kingston 240gb drive.

I use a 2.5SSD for my Wii.
There's no advantage nor disadvantages since the Wii is limited to USB 2.0 speeds.

The only advantage is that SSD uses 5V, so it'll just work as is with the USB cable.

HDD needs more power, sometimes 12V, which will require more effort to set-up and more cables to feed it in.

It works well for me. Can't really tell much difference, listing the games in USB Loader GX seems faster since it doesn't need to spin up the drive, not sure if there is any difference to load times in games. I think long term it will be more reliable. 2.5" HDDs always seem to die sooner than 3.5" and USB loaders are all reads, zero writes, so it shouldn't wear out the SSD flash. It's the ideal use case for SSDs.

I notice that nintendont when loading usb grabs the list much faster. My benchmarks when I turn on full read speed mode are 1 second faster. The main benefit is how much faster usb loader gx loads when grabbing games.

I have tested several HDDs and SSDs connected to a Wii and noticed the following details:

Here in Brazil, there are many cheap USB 2.0 HDD cases available on the market. People often buy them to use with their Wii but end up facing issues. HDDs and SSDs in these cases often fail to work properly. HDDs sometimes don't start and you can hear a clicking noise, with no apps appearing on the Homebrew Channel (HBC). In contrast, SSDs usually start correctly, and apps show up on HBC, but when trying to launch USB Loader GX, it often freezes on the message "Reinitializing Devices" (on WiiFlow, it freezes at the logo screen).

The easy fix for these issues is to switch to a higher-quality case, preferably a USB 3.0 one, assuming the HDD or SSD itself is in good condition. Alternatively, using a Y cable might resolve the issue.

It's rare for HDDs to have problems when used with a good-quality case (even better if it's a genuine external HDD). However, some SSDs may still show the "Reinitializing Devices" message in USB Loader GX. The only solution I've found for this is to format the SSD to WBFS.

Does this mean HDDs are more reliable?

When both HDD and SSD are working correctly, I haven't noticed significant differences between them. SSDs do start slightly faster (1 to 3 seconds quicker than HDDs), but I haven't observed any noticeable difference in game loading times.
