ROM Hack Using homebrew apps

I just an R4 and want to check out some homebrew apps, but I have a few questions:
1) what is DLDI? how do i patch an app? where does the dldi file go?
2) how do i access homebrew once on my R4?
3) can homebrew app be on the same SD card with commerical games?
