Hi i was wondering a few ?s im sorry if it was covered somewhere ...

Ok i bought a switch thats not patched and its on the latest firmware 8.1.0

And i wanted to know first whats the reason for obtaining console keys i have a switch that was already pre modded so im lost as ive read keys cant be grabbed on 8.1.0 with lockpick..

Could someone plz give a brief explanation of what these keys are for..i know on my 7.0.1 console it was already done i used keys.dat for xci to nsp worked flawless...

Just want to know how to go about things on 8.1.0 .. i know how to get into RCM mode and i know kosmos is updating to run on the latest firmware but did you need to obtain these keys on a lower fw like 7.0.1.. before updating..

Like i said its un patched but never was modded..

Thanks in advance for any help thrown my way...

Love this scene its the most lively ps4 is dead been for years.. so i grabbed another switch and im stuck lol

The keys contain content information prior to the firmware its supported in. So basically if you want to keep playing/converting new games, updates, and DLC you need to dump or download the keys from the latest Firmware. If you try to use a key from an older firmware to play a new game that requires a higher FW then you cannot convert it to the said program. Its like trying to play an 8.1.0 game on a 6.2 firmware Switch the keys wouldn't support that new game or update/dlc

In addition to the necessity for decrypting newer games/DLC/content on higher firmwares said keys are also needed to decrypt NAND partitions, restore from a brick etc. So, do not modify the NAND of your console in any way. (ie installing games to the NAND) for now.

Yeah i kinda figured it was something like that .. awesome thank you for clearing that up..

I wasnt too sure if i needed a certain key that was only obtainable with a certain .bin that wasnt working with 8.1.0.

I'm glad i could elaborate. Rest easy now and be sure to make NAND backups (including BOOT0/1) should anything go wrong.
As per the xci->NSP part you don't have to go through the long way of converting physical XCI to the NSP digital format given that at heart they're still switch games regardless, so get the NSP files without having to convert them from XCI. saves you a lot of time and effort.
take care :)

NSPs aren't always available, and XCI converts never seemed to work for me.

Lockpick_RCM can dump all the keys. They are mostly so that you can recover your data from NAND if something goes wrong, and to use some PC side tools that need them.
