You can buy 72-pin to 60-pin cartridge adapters that'll let you plug in an NES cartridge into a Famicom. It doesn't reset the cartridge or affect the way the game plays, it'll still run like you're playing on an North American console.

I'll honestly take the expansion audio, as well, at any day.

In the end I bought some FPGBCs as gifts for nieces/nephews

The value is good and it has compatibility with original games/hardware as well as QOL backlit screen and rechargeable batteries

You could argue a dsi, 3ds or GBA sp is better value and you're probably right - but I kinda just am imposing my own nostalgia on them AND burning money

Lites have better screens but second-hand systems are a gamble. You may or may not get one with a broken hinge or broken screen. At least it's good overall in comparison to the phats which have such a dim viewing angle that it appears like it's fried.

Sadly those console prices are a good reason for piracy, same with the games. I mean I get some yeah are in low production, but the ratio to low production games getting asinine pricing compared to ones that were run in the hundreds of thousands to millions of copies is unjustified as are some of the system prices too.

The 3DS is the killer one though as it wasn't short sold, it wasn't some small run like a virtual boy or even a few million like a mini nes/snes console either. The problem was timing & the shit virus and free gov't money handouts. It was the one that went UP never down when a system was retired. The last official Nintendo handheld only system, and they kill it in early 2020 right with lockdowns and payouts so it went up and up, the games got really shitty, though those largely have fallen to an acceptable normal value while bizzarely the handhelds have crackhead costs involved still.

I will add your values on some of those systems are wrong, if that's US dollars, I hope you're not looking for retards and/or 'asking' because neither of those are paying the usual. The NES and SNES can and do hit 100, but not 120-130 range if you're talking about just a stock system with the original contollers(2), av cable and power cable with their pack-in game.

The best bang for the buck is the AV Famicom with a retroad NES cart adapter. All you have to do is pop the top, run 2 tiny wires on the PCB to the gamepad jacks, and you can use all the cheap US accessories(zapper, vaus, etc) without eating the ugly Japanese revolver etc price. It's like a top loader, but with multi-av out not shitty jailbarred RF and has the expansion audio. Same argument with the Super Famicom w/an adapter to use SNES carts as well, costs less, opens up both markets, just doesn't need a hack to use accessories. In both cases a $20 TRIAD power supply will get you going rock solid.

I wouldn't go for a GB Pocket though, get a GBC, prices are close enough and opens the full 8bit library up if you're unwilling to step into a Chromatic or a FPGBC kit to have a modern display etc. GBA yeah the old is ok if you have good lighting for the price, most don't and you'll mod the thing or get some fix, so a SP(001) is a good sweet spot. Same as with the DS vs DSLite the lite runs GBA stuff, excellent screen, more comfy to use, better value to the dollar.
