My takeaways:

The DS phat is a great value
GB pocket another great value
If you want an NES, just buy a famicom and an adaptor
Original GBA very reasonably priced
The 3ds is somehow worth more than a switch nowadays

You can buy 72-pin to 60-pin cartridge adapters that'll let you plug in an NES cartridge into a Famicom. It doesn't reset the cartridge or affect the way the game plays, it'll still run like you're playing on an North American console.

I'll honestly take the expansion audio, as well, at any day.

The DS phat is a great value

Phat is cheaper but the screens on it are so bad. So very bad. Lite has better screens but it has the crappy hinge. So very crappy. It's a tossup.

In the end I bought some FPGBCs as gifts for nieces/nephews

The value is good and it has compatibility with original games/hardware as well as QOL backlit screen and rechargeable batteries

You could argue a dsi, 3ds or GBA sp is better value and you're probably right - but I kinda just am imposing my own nostalgia on them AND burning money
